How to make a good coffee?

Choosing a good coffee

In principle, we always recommend that you buy freshly roasted coffee from a small roaster that you trust. If you are using pre-ground industrial roasting, you have already found the most important reason for your dissatisfaction with the taste of coffee. It is also important to note for which method of preparation the coffee is recommended. Dark roast espresso is not suitable for a French press.

Equipment

For home use, you don't necessarily need a high-end coffee machine. With a mid-range coffee machine, you will be able to make really good coffees and be very happy with them. However, be sure to adjust your coffee machine and maintain it regularly. You can also take a look at our full guide to finding the best machine .

Cleanliness of your coffee machine

Even if it sometimes seems superfluous or tedious in everyday life: it is extremely important to clean all the objects you use in order to prepare coffee properly. Since coffee contains fats and oils, they also settle on the equipment and, in contact with oxygen, they become rancid.

This can quickly spoil a good cup of coffee and, especially with fully automatic machines or if milk is also involved, you should attach great importance to a thorough cleaning at least once a week. It is important to rinse everything well after cleaning, because sometimes the residue from the cleaning product can also affect the taste.

Storing coffee correctly

If you want to enjoy your coffee for a long time, it is important to store it properly after purchase. A word of advice: do not store coffee in the refrigerator. The basic rule is: dry, cool (room temperature), protected from light, protected from foreign smells and for as short a time as possible!

Water quality and temperature

As coffee is about 98% water, good water is a prerequisite for good coffee. We recommend - also to protect your brewing tools - to use only filtered water. The water must have an average degree of hardness (pH value 7). If the water is too hard, the coffee becomes flat and the aromas cannot develop. Very soft water tends to make the coffee bitter.

The water temperature is just as important: for filter coffee, the temperature should be 86 to 93 C ° and for espresso 92 to 96 C °. It is also worth experimenting with the brewing temperature. Click here Meilleuremachineàcafé    (Best coffee machine)
